20 Sep 1916

early 1920’s
The Charles Barnett family moved to Breckenridge, Stephens County, Texas. The family farm had failed. He worked in a carbon factory, but had to quit for health reasons. He also worked in the Amarillo oil fields and hauled water and sold it for $1.00 per barrel in Breckenridge – an oil-town with no good water. (Interview with Charlotte M. Charles and his family moved to Southern California looking for work in the oil fields. They settled in Long Beach, California. (Interview with Charlotte M. (Barnett) Wood – about 1974.)

1925 – 1942
Charles was living in Long Beach, California and working for R R Bush Oil Co. (Long Beach City Directories, various years)

1930
Forty-year-old Charles was living with his wife and four children in Long Beach, Los Angeles County, California. (1930 U.S. Census)

1943-1944
He was employed as a pumper with RR Bush Oil Company in Long Beach, California. (Long Beach City Directories, 1943 and 1944)

1950’s
Charlie suffered severe burns in a workplace accident. After entering a building to check on the equipment, a valve (which had not been shut down properly) burst and the resulting steam caused severe burns. It took a long time for him to recover from this accident. (Interview with Charlotte M. (Storti) Roos – 2000)

17 Oct 1972
